new twist
I've been auditing and herbalism class here at HSU, and strangely enough, it's gotten me thinking about a lot of different things. In the past few months, I've become more turned on to plants, and how people have manipulated them over time and utilized them for....everything....medicine, food, etc. It's an aspect of my very general degree I never really tapped into before, so it's turning my head in a completely different direction. The herbalism practice is really inspiring to me, but I want to have a deeper scientific knowledge of the properties of plants and how they can be utilized. Ethnobotany is really fascinating to me, but I almost want to put that knowledge towards a non research application. This has brought me to....med school. Scary, I know...but I think I'm more interested in osteopathic medicine and the whole body medicine approach. Haha...I've heard it described as hippie med school. I've been researching it a lot and I dont know....being able to use holistic knowledge to practice family medicine and still have that deep rooted hard science base would be pretty incredible. Problem: I feel like this is a completely different direction than where I was going. Med school is SO scary....it consumes your life and spits you out....and there's always that chance of failure. It takes a lot of preparation....but I think an osteopathic path might be more what I'm looking for...treating people's whole bodies...its a bridge between holistics and modern medicine. If I wanted to become an expert in herbals, I could still do that and apply it to my post school career....which brings about other questions....what would I ACTUALLY be doing with a med school degree and all the debt I accrued over those years? It's a really big deal....and honestly.....would you want THIS as your doctor?
:)
It's certainly something to think about. I just want people to nurture their minds with their bodies, and I think I might be able to do that.

Have you thought about naturopathic medicine? Sounds like that may be the direction your looking for. Just a thought.
A medical and herbal degree would seem to be a good combination.
Why not?
